Adventures in lapbooking

Lapbooking. It's a word I was vaguely familiar with, but had never considered incorporating in our homeschool. If you're not familiar with it, it's basically scrapbooking everything a student has learned on a particular topic in one folder. From what I can tell, there are really no rules, but plenty of fantastic ideas and examples can be found on the Internet. Let me say it again, "How DID we homeschool without the Internet?"

We are working this week on a unit study of football. We've done some fun activities and the boys are enjoying it. Somehow a link for lapbooking ended up in my in-box this morning. Before I knew it I was printing and planning for our football lapbooks. The boys spent hours researching and reading facts, cutting, coloring, organizing, writing and creating. At the end of the day, the consensus was unanimous - all three of my boys agreed it was the best day of homeschooling they had ever had. I think we'll be incorporating lapbooks more often!

Here are a couple of good links I found. If you've never checked out lapbooking, I would recommend it as a neat extension activity for anything you are currently studying. The possibilities are endless.

Lapbooking on Squidoo - this one is a great jumping off point. I was able to get the basics and show the boys some good examples of what we were trying to accomplish.

Scrapbooking to Learn - good step-by-step example.

Hands of a Child - an entire business geared toward lapbooking...who knew? You can purchase and download lapbooks on almost any subject. They also offer a free project each quarter.

  1. Hi there,
It's funny, I didn't know you from HSBer but I found you here. LOL. I clicked on your name from the 5Minutes blog.

You have a beautiful blog here.

My girls and I love lapbooking. We've done it many different ways. This year, even though they are in high school, we are studying a new continent each month and they pick a country from there to do a lapbook on. We use the Live and Learn Study a Country forms. I LOVE them because I just print out the books and my girls can research on their own. You can find them here if your interested:

  3. I homeschool a 9 yr old boy with Asperger's Syndrome (a form of autism). He would love to learn about football in order to connect better with his peers (not to mention hubbie would love it!) Can you give some tips on how you did your football lapbooks?

  4. AspieMom,

Couldn't get your link to work, so I will leave you a comment here and hope you see it.

I allowed my boys quite a bit of freedom with their lapbooks because they know so many facts about football. I gave them ideas and then just let them go at it. I did find lots of fun worksheets, puzzles and printable games on-line for doing football units.

I found a plain football helmet and the boys decorated it for their favorite team. We wrote cartoons with captions. You can write math problems out of football stories. We printed off a US map and they put each team on the map. We googled the history of football. We printed off pictures of all the penalties and what they meant. My youngest drew pictures of healthy foods the players would need to eat before a game. We also found a story about the basics of football - how the game is played. This might be a big help.
